Every decade has its financial ups and downs, and by now we have all heard about the 2008 financial disruptions.
In addition to the job losses and downsizing of corporations, uncertainty in business and the real estate market will present daunting challenges over the next few years. Many companies are cutting personnel to survive the hard times ahead, and some individual businesses are even closing down.
Despite these challenges, some companies are doing extremely well, and refuse to share in the pervasive doom and gloom. And while every downfall brings disaster for some, it also brings great opportunity for others. In fact, some businesses actually thrive during economic downturns.
The million-dollar question is this: what is it about these companies that allows them to thrive when others are collapsing, and what can we do to be the ones with the great potential?
If you have been climbing the corporate ladder trying to break through the “glass ceiling,” or have recently launched your own business venture, this could be your chance to show off your skills and demonstrate real leadership while others are just trying to stay afloat. The keys are confidence, projecting an aura of success (even when you don’t feel like it) and exceptional organizational skills.
Becoming a success during a financial downfall requires us to work not only hard, but smart and efficient. Gone are the days where we can take it easy and hope that the customers will flock to our door.
1.Think positive! Staying upbeat while others around you are complaining will help to attract customers and enable you to get along with colleagues, superiors and anyone else you come in contact with.
2.Stay away from office politics. Avoid discussing other employees unless you have something positive to say.
3.Be a cheerleader. Praise others for their work, help people solve problems, and provide solutions. Be creative in marketing and sales campaigns, if that applies to your profession. If not, focus on providing the best customer service.
4.Find your niche, then capitalize on it.
5.Evaluate your job performance to determine whether you are contributing to your company’s growth.
6.Get involved in your company. In hard times, finding ways to promote the business through networking can be very rewarding.
7.Revisit your skill set. Find a seminar, training, or book that will improve your skills and keep you on top of your game.
8.Be flexible and listen to your boss or your customer. Keep an open mind to their suggestions and be willing to test them in the real world.
9.Find out how many people within your organization really matter and be one of them.
10.If you are in business for yourself, research your competition, learn from their mistakes, and capitalize on their success by implementing their best practices.
Time mastery is the key. Organize your day to get the most done and you will always be the one that gets things done.
Join me this Thursday at 5:30 PST as I interview Karin, Fabulously40’s Time Management Expert to get tips, suggestions
and strategies on how to optimize our day. I welcome you to post your questions below so we can address them during our podcast.
I have a question. What strategies can I use to keep focused and on task? I am easily distracted, can piddle time away readily and then tend to try and multitask to a point where I get very little accomplished completely and well.
Looking forward to the podcast
Cynthia
This is a great post and I look forward to hearing the podcast. You and I sound so much alike. Cynthia, your ideas are great. You need us as a group to keep telling you that you can do it! You are gifted in the art of CHOCOLATES! I think that it is great that you have focused on perfecting one product in different ways. You just need to have us help you stay motivated!
I had to finally learn to make myself get with my projects. I am chipping and chopping away at them as I go. My problem is that I know a little about a lot of things and not enough about any one thing! I get bored very easy and I dabble in so much. Getting side tracked can be easy for me if I don’t focus. This could be a type of neurosis or other mental issue… LOL but I’m not one to visit the doctor. Surely being CrAzy will not kill me but those around me could suffer! HeHe Weeding through the clutter of my brain and environment is what helps me the most. I need an organized environment. Cleaning out and get organized is my greatest help. And I learned not to worry. I’m not saying that I never do but I try not to. It messes with our train of thought. It is negative and unnecessary because it keeps me from doing what I need to do. I’m a true “multi tasker” but I can easily go into complete overload. I have trouble asking for help. And if I ever do ask…..then I feel guilty. What is that all about? Do you do that? I still have soooo many things going on at once. But if it was any different I think that I would shrivel up and wither away. I might explode one day!!! LOL
Take care,
Gayle

Will that be on the site and will it 3:30 central time?
Forgive me if I am a little DUH but what is podcast again?
I am still learning all this stuff.

Hi Bella,
Podcast is like conference call. You call in and listen live, at the end usually it’s open for questions.
Central time is two hours ahead of PST
So call in at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow.
Sorry I missed the PM part. I got my 2 hour difference time confused. what is the number you call, can that be done by cell phone or only on computer?
Thanks,
Bella
Yana,
You are wonderful! I want to be you when I grow up! LOL
Great advice; and I look forward to the podcast. Being a mom of 12 doesn’t guarantee that I am organized. We live in controlled chaos most of the time. I call it Tyranny of the Urgent (stolen from Purpose Driven Life – or some title similar to that.)
Sharing Hope,
Dee Dee

Great advice and tips for success! Thank you, Yana, this could‘nt have come at a better time.
It’s the holiday season and we should all be thankful for what we have. I recently took a load of clothes that I don’t wear any longer and donated them to the local Good Will Store. There are a lot of folks out there that simply can’t afford to shop at the Mall. However, they can look nice at work, for a fraction of the cost. I guess I’ll call this my “Girl Scout Deed of the day“.
Great Post
