Our Puppy Cat

If you’ve looked at my profile pics, you have probably stumbled across the pic of my very handsome Shih-Tzu, Berkley.  He came with that name…i’d have never chosen it.

Berkley came to our house one afternoon under the arm of my neice, Melissa, who was living with us at the time.  She said that her BF bought this dog when she had her apartment and since she’d moved home, her BF’s father had relegated the dog to the basement…for days on end.  Melissa decided that she had to rescue the pup.

When i first met Berkley, his hair was to the floor and he was in desperate need of making friends with a brush!  When he was put before me, i sat and waited to see how he would respond to my family.  It didn’t take long before his personality began to show and i was immediately smitten!  I told my neice that i’d have to talk to my husband before i could promise to take the dog.

When my husband arrived home from work, i told him the situation and he asked, “Why do you want a dog?”  Y‘see, he’d been the only obstacle between us being a no-pet family and a one-dog family.  I responded to my husband’s question with, “You have to meet the dog.  He has a very cool personality and i think you’ll like him.”  Huz was not convinced.  We talked about it a little bit more and he finally conceded to meeting the dog.  I immediately called Melissa and told her to bring Berkley back to the house so that Uncle Paul could meet him.

Berkley never left.  He was instantly attracted to my husband and hasn’t left his side, yet.  If my husband takes one step, Berkley takes two.  If my husband sits, Berkley is in his lap.  If my husband lays down, Berkley jumps onto him and lays down either on top of him or beside him.  When my husband gets home from work (or anywhere else), Berkley is jumping up and down with glee when he walks into the door.  Berkley even sits on the back of “Daddy’s” leather chair and watches out the window for people to come home…most especially my husband, Berkley’s human Daddy.  If i tease, and ask Berkley, “Is your Daddy home?” he will run to the window and look…and he is not happy if there is no Daddy.

One of the most outstanding personality traits of this dog is his resemblance to a CAT!  Yes, that’s what i said…our dog is part cat.  I used to call him “Puppy Cat” but huz told me i needed to stop that before i gave the dog an identity crisis.  If i call Berkley to come to me, he looks at me like i’m crazy.  Does he come when he is called, like NORMAL dogs do?  No.  Berkley is also very particular what treats he will eat and under what conditions he will eat them.  You can’t give him ONE treat…he must have TWO before he will eat one.  And probably the most feline trait this dog has, is his love of sleeping on the backs of chairs and sofas.  Case and point…

This is where i found him this afternoon when i arrived home from taking Kelly to a friend’s.

I just thought i’d share…he’s brought our family so much laughter and joy in the 5+ years since he’s arrived.
