This is a 5th grade math problem. This is not a trick question. This is a real math problem so don’t say that a bus has no legs.
There are 7 girls in a bus.
Each girl has 7 backpacks.
In each backpack, there are 7 big cats.
For every big cat there are 7 little cats.
Bus driver is not in the bus at this time.
Question: How many legs are there in the bus?
HMMMM….are there 70 legs on the bus?

There are 14 human legs,
If you count cats there are 10,976 cats legs

OK, tammiejo- maybe we are on the right track since 2 of us came up with the same answer…....
7 girls = 14 legs
each girl has 7 bags = 49 * 7 cats in each = 343 *4 legs = 1372
each big cat has 7 little cats 343 * 7 = 2401 * 4 legs each =
9604 legs
14 + 1372 + 9604 = 10,990 legs
Way to go to all my girls!
MY FORMULA:
1. There are 7 girls . . . each girl has 2 legs . . . 7girls * 2 legs/girl = 14 legs attributable to the girls.
2. Each girl has seven backpacks . . . 7 girls * 7 backpacks/girl = 49 backpacks
There are seven big cats per backpack . . . 49 backpacks * 7 big cats/backpack = 343 big cats.
There are four legs per cat . . . 343 big cats * 4 legs/cat = 1372 legs attributable to the big cats.
3. There are 7 little cats per big cat . . . 7 little cats/big cats * 343 big cats = 2401 little cats
There are 4 legs per little cat . . . 2401 little cats * 4 legs/little cat = 9604 legs attributable to the little cats
CONCLUSION
Total legs = 14 (attributable to girls) + 1372 (attributable to big cats) + 9604 (attributable to little cats) = 10,990 legs total
Assuming that: (a) no one else is on the bus but the girls and the cats; and (b) there are no leg amputees among the girls or the cats; (c) the girls have their backpacks with them on the bus.

7 girls x 7 backpacks each= 49 backpacks
49 backpacks x 7 big cats in each = 343
343 big cats x 7 little cats for each big one = 2401
2401 little cats + 343 big cats = 2744 cats
2744×4 legs each= 10976 cat legs
10976 cat legs = 14 human legs = 10990 total legs on the bus

Okay Ladies, I will be the first to tell you-I’m not smarter than a 5th grader. Are you kidding, I watch that show.
However, my husband loves the show and just came in about 2 sheets in the wind.
I have given him this math problem…let’s see how he fairs. If you could be here to see him…It will drive him crazy.
He just said 70…I sent him back to re-figure.

He just came back in with 1973. I said no, he said, am I high(I did mention he’s 2 sheets in the wind) so I said yes you are. But no you‘re not.
He’s an engineer with a contact lense company and works with #’s every day, no problem. But give him a check book or this math problem and he’s lost.
When I get really fed up, I throw him the check book. He holds his head so tight trying to figure things out.
I expect he will have some cat legs prints on his brain tonight.
