My LEAST favorite household duty has always been to wash “that” dreaded pan I used to fry a food. Ughhhhh!!!
That was until I took a dish detergent commercial seriously and thought,“Hmmmm,How well does it cut grease.” ~Ha Ha
So the next time I had a pan that I fried something in I poured out the grease, used a papertowel to soak up the rest, then I added dish detergent to the pan before I added ANY water, then I used a dish brush to soak the grease into the detergent. I then rinsed it with water and “waaalaaaaaaa!”
I no longer hate those dreaded grease pans, and I am now a
happy dish washing woman. ~Ha Ha
This may seem like an “oh so simple” hint to some… but oh
how I LOVE having one less little dreaded household duty
go away.
I hope you will add yours !!!!!

One of my favorite floor products is made from “Holloway House,” called “Quick Shine.” It puts an amazing shine on wood floors. You can also use it on vinyl. It dries within
5–10 minutes and you swear it is still wet because the shine is so amazing. They also have a great floor cleaner for mopping.. and it smells soooooo good!
I give this product an A+++
LOL at Lucinda!
I like to clean stainless steel pans with baking soda and lemon juice before adding water.
Krud Kutter is the best cleaner I have EVER found. It took crayon and sharpie marker off my wood walls!
Money saving tip – swish a little water around in your jars after emptying the sauce to get the last drops out. I also do this with shampoo and conditioner. Add water, and get 3 or four more applications out of the bottle. Oh, and me the penny pincher – I use my hubby’s used razors. I hate new ones because I always cut myself. He tosses his at the first sign of dullness. Now I just take his old blade and put it on my razor. LOL

My cleaning Godsend is Goo Gone. I use it all the time because I make candles and have to clean up wax and dye. My husband accidentally washed a Chapstick and it got all over his shirts. He sprayed Goo Gone before he re-washed, and the greasy stain came out. It even took the paint off the front fender of my white roadster the time I scraped it against the garage.
Mad driving skills, too? Nice.
When Scott worked in the shop, I would add a capful of Pinesol (not the generic, watery version) or Mr. Clean to the laundry (still using detergent, fab softener, etc., as normal). It helped cut the grease and get that not-so-yummy shop smell out of everything.
Another product that works on a lot of things is Oxyclean. I add it to the laundry to get the stains out of my socks and paint out of my shirts. (I teach music and art at Gymboree and we are not allowed to wear shoes) It also works great cleaning stains out of the carpet.
Bona is fantastic for wood floors.
Anyone has any tips on how to prevent the house from smelling of all of the cleaning products afterwards?
And can I just say that I absolutely HATE anything that has to do with cleaning, but I do LOVE a clean house.
The best cleaning tip I ever got was to marry a man who didn’t mind doing all the cleaning.
Boy did I capitalize on that little gem.
Sorry, Yana, we like the cleaning smells. Of course, during and for a while after, we burn scented candles. A good, rich candle will help to eliminate that chemical smell.
Might I suggest lightfandangocandles.com? ;)
Yana, go to ballards air freshners.com
When I lived in Florida, I knew several home builders. When they would have a open house the house smelled so good. Finally, I asked my friend what were they using and it was one of the freshners hidden some behind some greenery. Some of the homes smelled like bubble gum and it was funny seeing the customer walking through sniffing the air.
Mulberry is my favorite and the number one seller. I purchased one of the machines (this was in 93) and it still works like new! They really have great sales during the holidays. Everytime I have company over they ask about it and of course it’s hidden behind some decor. :>)

Bar Keeper’s Friend- great for cleaning stainless steel pans and for shower doors.
If I need extra cleaning power in my laundry I use baking soda.
To cut grease and help clean dishes better I use vinegar with my method detergent.
To get the smell of garlic off your hands touch an area with stainless steel. A stainless steel spatula works well.
I use drops of essential oils to give me house a fresh smell and lavendar at night to help me sleep.
Try not to let the junk mail enter your house by recycling it immediately. I get overwhelmed this time of year with catalogs. I can’t keep up!!
Make sure everything in your house as a spot or else you will always have clutter.
To keep your closet smelling fresh you can clip a few dryer sheets to a hanger. I no longer use dryer sheets in the dryer because I heard that they can leave a sticky residue in the lint catcher and vent tube.
Never leave your house with the dryer on. It is a cause of lots of fires. I nearly had a fire form lint that was not getting blown out properly and it built up on the bottom of the dryer. I smelled something burning and of course my ex husband thought I was imagining it. The lint was black and you can see it would have caused a major fire.
Use hair conditioner on your legs when shaving.
Use lambs wool(used for toe dancers)in any sore areas of new shoes.
Well…..that seems like more than enough for now.

Yeah! Some new household tips for Della! (I mean Dell-oise…) ( Your funny Lucinda
I am going to print all of these so I can try them. Woohoooo
I have to admit that I LIKE to clean. I know… I’m a weirdo. ~Ha Ha
Candles are a great way to eliminate “that” just cleaned
smell.
Yana,I really like my candle warmers a lot. This way you don’t have to worry about candle soot on the ceiling.
I like the candle wamer that is flat, and a large candle sits on top of it. It has an on/off switch. The candle holds it’s scent for months and months.
In addition, whether it is safe or not…. I keep a candle on a candle warmer going 24 hours, every day, in the room that the cat litter box is in. If I have to have a cat because I live in the country to keep the mice away, I want something that eliminates any evidence of a cat’s liter box.
In lieu of candles…. nothing says,“romance,” or gives your
house that wonderful"homey" feeling like a candle and it's flame in the evening. IS THERE A WAY TO SAFELY remove soot from the ceiling ?????????????????????????
Any help would be MUCH appreciated !!!!!!!!!!!
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh noooooooooooooooooo… the rest of my post was deleted !!!!!!!!! Waaaaaaaaaaa :>(
“Dell-oise” is back (that’ funny Lucinda!!!) trying to post again. Hopefully this time it WILL.
I loved reading all of YOUR hints! Wooohhhhhhhhhhoooo, I can’t wait to try them! I am one of those “odd ones” who
DOES enjoy tolling about the house and cleaning. I do NOT enjoy it when I have a lot going on in my life and it is a necessity! But when I have a break and the extra time, it is relaxing to me. I also feel more relaxed when my home feels fresh and tidy. Having new products and “tips” to try might be how a man might feel when he purchases a new tool. Ha Ha
Let me see if this post properly before I continue.
I also like using candles to freshen up a room.
I really like my candle warmer that I can sit a large candle on. It has an off/on switch that makes it easy to use, without unplugging it. Whether right or wrong, I have a candle on a warmer that stays on twenty-four hours a day,
7 days a week in the room that the cat liter box is in.
The candle makes sure there is no evidence of a liter box present. I live in the country and an indoor cat is a must.
The candles aroma last for up to 3 to 4 months.
Note: That is for the particular candle I use.
Nothing says “Home,” or “Romance,” like a candle with it’s flame flickering however….......
Is there a proper way to clean soot from the ceiling ?????
I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE ANY HELPFUL HINTS!!!!!!
“Touch It Once“...this is the approach that works to help keep my home organized and clutter free. Put things where they go the first time it is in your hands. This way you don’t forget about it and it just winds up in another “to do” pile.
I also like to open the box of kitchen bags and place them all in the bottom of my trash can. That way when I remove a full one, I can replace the bag right away.
Store things where you use them!
Hi Gals,
Not sure what happened with some of your posts, I will alert the web team.
Sorry.
Y
Does anyone have any recommendations on how to free my shower doors from that awful crappy-looking, scummy, cloudy film? Did I mention how crappy it looks? I’ve tried a ton of different products, techniques, etc. and haven’t had much luck. And we don’t have hard water! Anyway, whatever suggestions you might have would be greatly appreciated. I’d really like to take a blow torch to them, but am afraid of singeing my eyebrows. :-)
for the scum on the shower doors I have used Bar Keepers Friend. It is a powder that comes in a can like comet. The can is gold with blue lettering. It is very drying on the hands. I would use a dobie pad and do it in a circular motion.
It can get anything off a stainless pan even if you have it black with burned meat if you cook on high. You have to use some muscle; but it is a great product.
Hugs-
Dianne
Vinegar will work on that shower door scum, too.
We had a well at our last house, and our dishes would come out of the dishwasher covered in a white, chalky film.
We started putting 1/2 cup of vinegar in the bottom of the dishwasher with each load of dishes and they came out sparkling.
After getting that awful scum off shower doors dry the door and shower walls after using to keep it from reoccuring. Takes a little more time to do this, but it sure keeps them looking good for a long time. Don’t forget the bottom tracks of that door either. Nasties can sure collect down there.
But, I think the best hint I was ever given was right after I got married some 43 years ago. A dear older friend told me to get up every morning and pretend an old boyfriend would drop in. I used that idea to get me motivated for years. And you know what, she was right. Every evening around 5 p.m. and old boyfriend appeared at my door and I sure was glad I had prepared for his visit.
Although I now have a housekeeper I still use that idea when I dress every day. What if I run into -- today, what would he think? Around 5 p.m. my life-long fella appears and he always thinks I'm beautiful.
Problems with Posts solved.
Jackie, it was the happy faces that were making your posts invisible.
Our awesome team provided a fix to wrap around your smily faces and all the posts are back.
Today is the last day of Fire Safety Week, and Dell-oise hits upon a very good tip for not burning your house down. Those electric candle warmers are great. If you would accidentally leave one on, you‘re not running the risk of fire. These are excellent in households with elderly folks, kids, and also in dorms where they do not allow open flame. Plus, you’ll save money because your candles last much, much longer. If you have wax tarts, just put them in a heat-resistant glass container, and you can melt them on the warmer, too.
(Now, the shameless plug…)
I do carry them on my website, lightfandangocandles.com
I am having such a great time reading your post of suggestions. And Lucinda...no shame in letting us know where we can buy such a wonderful accessorie for our candles! And COOOOOooool now I know how I can use all of my millions of tarts, and votives left over from my gift shop.
I will put them in a heart resistant container and put them on my warmer. Did I already say Yea Hee Hee
I have some good tips to try this weekend! Starting with using vinegar in my dishwasher this morning! WooHooooo
One of my MOST favorite household products is “The Works.”
I couldn’t live without it. Before I had my home connected from well to city water, The Works was the ONLY product that
would lift the awful rust stain in my shower, etc.
And even though I have city water, arghhhhhh, I still have some sort of slight rust stain. (What gives) But “The Works” does work. And I also guarentee it takes off the scum of glass!!! If they stopped making “that” product I would be screwed!!!
I better send this before it gives me a time out!
I also had found that a little bit of bleach in my dish water is great for giving any dish a “pick me up” that has become discolored. Or for dishes that are white and have discoloration. It also has helped in the past for dishes that have become cloudy from well water. ( Bleach is also good in the dishwater if there has been someone sick in the household, to aid in killing any germs on the dishes.)
On a different note, a friend of mine who cleans homes told me that she uses a tub and sink POLISH after she cleans it.
The polish acts like a protectant so that the water doesn’t “cling” to the walls or surface. It really is a cool product. Especially for ceramic sinks.
I hope you all are having a GREAT Saturday morning !!!!
I just thought of another great hint that you all might like, since I just removed my cup from the microwave.
I worked at Pillsbury for a number of years and since there were so many workers using only two microwaves,of course it would become pretty “icky” during the week. To aid in getting any stuck food, etc. out the sanitation workers would add a little water to the bottom and sides and turn it on for, (however long), and sure enough… it made it a breeze to clean.
It is so nice to know there are little things we can do to help us with those annoying household chores, isn’t it? lol
I love the “Works” too. It is horribly toxic, but it cleans like nobody’s business in the bathroom. I don’t care for the tub and shower cleaner Works- it doesn’t works so well. :) The toilet bowl Works gets the scum off, but I have to hold my breath when I use it.
I tend to prefer vinegar/baking soda – non-toxic cleaners, but for my bathroom with our well water nothing else Works like The Works. :)
Crumpled up newspaper or coffee filters (unused!) will clean your windows – no cleaning smell left over.

I have a helpful hint for shaving…use hot running water and your favorite lotion! It’s especially effective under the arms where my skin is sensitive. No knicks or cuts ever! Also, I don’t wash it off after, just wipe the excess lotion off with a soft wash cloth.
Something I do that helps me in my daily life is to have a basket that holds folders. Each folder has a specific name. It can be for bills due, bills paid, coupons, something I am working on at the moment,or anything that is at the forefront of that month. I even have one for new addresses. Then at a later time I can file these things, put them where they should be,or throw them away when they are no longer important.
I hope you will find this helpful.
If your stove top gets a lil on the nasty side a good and easy way to clean it is to use oven cleaner. Just follow directions as if you were cleaning the inside of the oven and voila! the goop comes right off.
I have a good one, if anyone other than me every gets busy and has trouble with soap scum, SOS pads will clean a shower tile like nobody’s business!
Keeping the inside of my car clean is my evil monster. I practically live in my car during the week and it looks like it! Anyone got any helpful hints on that one?

Unique and Useful Tips!
Reheat Pizza:
Heat up leftover pizza in a non-stick skillet on top of the
stove, set heat to med-low and heat until warm. This keeps the crust crispy. No soggy micro pizza. I saw this on the cooking channel and it really works.
Easy Deviled Eggs:
Put cooked egg yolks in a zip lock bag. Seal, mash till they
are all broken up. Add remainder of ingredients, reseal, keep mashing it up mixing thoroughly, cut the corner tip of the baggy, squeeze mixture into egg. Just throw bag away when done easy clean up.
Expanding Frosting:
When you buy a container of cake frosting from the store,
whip it with your mixer for a few minutes. You can double it in size. You get to frost more cake/cupcakes with the same amount. You also eat less sugar/calories per serving.
Reheating refrigerated bread:
To warm biscuits, pancakes, or muffins that were refrigerated, place them in a microwave with a cup of water. The increased moisture will keep the food moist and help it reheat faster.
Newspaper weeds away:
Start putting in your plants; work the nutrients in your
soil. Wet newspapers put layers around the plants overlapping as you go cover with mulch and forget about weeds. Weeds will get through some gardening plastic they will not get through wet newspapers.
Broken Glass:
Use a dry cotton ball to pick up little broken glass pieces of glass- the fibers catch ones you can’t see!
No More Mosquitoes:
Place a dryer sheet in your pocket. It will keep the mosquitoes away.
Squirrel Away:
To keep squirrels from eating your plants sprinkle your plants with cayenne pepper. The cayenne pepper doesn’t hurt the plant and the squirrels won’t come near it.
Flexible vacuum:
To get something out of a heat register or under the fridge add an empty paper towel roll or empty gift wrap roll to your vacuum hose. It can be bent or flattened to get in narrow openings.
Reducing Static Cling:
Pin a small safety pin to the seam of your slip and you will not have a clingy skirt or dress. Same thing works with slacks that cling when weari ng panty hose. Place pin in seam of slacks and – voila – static is gone.
Measuring Cups:
Before you pour sticky substances into a measuring cup, fill it with hot water. Dump out the hot water, but don’t dry the cup. Next, add your ingredient, such as peanut butter, and watch how easily it comes right out.
Foggy Windshield:
Hate foggy windshields? Buy a chalkboard eraser and keep it in the glove box of your car. When the windows fog, rub with the eraser! Works better than a cloth!
Reopening envelope:
If you seal an envelope and then realize you forgot to include something inside, just place your sealed envelope in the freezer for an hour or two. Voila! It unseals easily.
Conditioner:
Use your hair conditioner to shave your legs. It’s a lot cheaper than shaving cream and leaves your legs really smooth. It’s also a great way to use up the conditioner you bought but didn’t like when you tried it in your hair…
Goodbye Fruit Flies:
To get rid of pesky fruit flies, take a small glass fill it 1/2” with Apple Cider Vinegar and 2 drops of dishwashing liquid, mix well. You will find those flies drawn to the cup and gone forever!
Get Rid of Ants:
Put small piles of cornmeal where you see ants. They eat it, take it “home,” & can’t digest it so it kills them. It may take a week or so, esp. if it rains, but it works & you don’t have the worry about pets or small children being harmed!
Take baby powder to the beach:
Keep a small bottle of baby powder in your beach bag. When your ready to leave the beach sprinkle yourself and kids with the powder and the sand will slide right off your skin.
Mary, What awesome tips. I am still sitting here with my mouth open on the baby powder and cornmeal tips.
Wow, This is why I love this site. I am learning something new everyday. I am loving the lessons.
Thanks !!!
